Chapter Forty-Four…

 

Chapter 44: Full Circle

The Riverview Church sat amidst the quaint countryside.

One morning in April, several people showed up to attend a wedding.

Travis Moore, Preston Nutter, Kayla Montgomery, and Bella Moore were in attendance.

Earlier, naughty little Bella had taken off her shoes.

Every so often while awaiting the bride and groom, the toddlers ran amuck.

“Stop running around!” Travis shouted. They were driving him crazy.

The 3-tier wedding cake nestled upon the table, awaiting the knife that would soon cut it.

However, that will never happen since no one can actually eat it.

Roger and Audrey sat in front.

When the soft music began, Audrey teared up.

“I can’t believe it… Lila’s finally getting married,” she said.

Lila marched down the aisle with Nick’s father. Robert Moore decided to (reluctantly, since he had the hots for her as well) give the bride away, since Lila didn’t know her own father.

Roger and Audrey stood as the bride gradually approached the groom. The bridesmaids stood like a row of Barbie dolls on their stands.

Each girl watched the ceremony, struggling to fight off her own tears.

Nick, incredibly handsome in his tux, glared at Preston as he picked his nose.

“Stand up!” Travis hissed at the toddlers.

Then three of the youngest guests stood, their little eyes lifting to Nick.

…including Kayla, Nick and Lila’s newly adopted daughter.

Of course they couldn’t let her suffer through the foster care system. Besides, Lila loved her as if she were her own. And Nick knew he would grow to love her as if she were also his own. It was only a matter of time, for Kayla was a special and wonderful little girl.

Slowly, Lila and Robert stepped down that center aisle.

The Wedding March played on the sound system, echoing in the massive church.

Lila gazed intently at Nick; disbelieving everything going on around her. It was quite surreal.

                                                            …

At last, Robert stepped aside.

…leaving Lila to join Nick in matrimony.

The music ceased, creating a hushed silence.

One of the bridesmaids blotted her tears.

“I’ve waited for this day since we were kids,” Nick said.

“So are you ready to be Mrs. Moore?” he asked a moment later.

“What do you think?” she replied.

He laughed.

“Just get on with it already,” Travis muttered.

Indeed, they did.

Nick held up the golden band and recited: “I, Nick Moore, take you, Lila Harris, to be my wedded wife.”

“To have and to hold, from this day forward…”

                                                            …

“For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health…”

“To love and to cherish…”

“Till death do us part,” he said.

                                                        …

Now it was Lila’s turn. She grasped Nick’s left hand.

“I, Lila Harris, take you, Nick Moore, to be my wedded husband.”

“To have and to hold, from this day forward…”

“For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health; to love and to cherish, till death do us part,” she said.

 “And hereto I pledge you my faithfulness,” they said in unison.

Even Roger quietly cried. “Dude,” he quietly sobbed, “it’s so beautiful.”

Audrey rolled her eyes.

Robert watched, probably wondering where his own youth had gone and marveling over how nice it’d be to be young again. Plus, he still had the hots for Lila.

“I love you Nick,” Lila said.

He smiled.

Throwing his arms around her waist, he pulled her close.

Another song began to play on the sound system. It was a slow sonata, something classical played on a piano.

“May I have the first dance?” he asked.

Lila nodded, as Nick led her on a romantic dance around the room.

Lifting her hand into the air, he spun her around. She felt dizzy. Then he dipped her and the next thing she knew, she was looking up at the ceiling. Nick was over her, and she felt herself falling further… he covered her mouth in a stolen kiss.

At that moment, nothing mattered. They were the only two in the entire universe. Anything else merely became a haze.

And then they finished.

Lila was no longer Lila Elle Harris. She was someone else, someone who belonged to Nick Moore forever.

Kayla went up to her mother.

“Pick me up!” She grinned, her little arms outstretched.

Lila lifted her into the air, spinning her around until they both nearly fell.

                                                            …

Everyone cheered; including Robert, as he finally broke out of his solemness.

And indeed, they all lived happily ever after.
