Chapter Forty…

Chapter 40: Beginning of the End.

lol, it’s not what you think…

“Travis wrote a note and stuck it in the cabinet,” Nick said. “It said that Darius kissed you.”

His pain was tangible, showing in his eyes like ominous shadows.

“Nick, I’m sorry. When Darius told me he was moving away, I got kinda crazy. Not to make excuses, but I was also drunk. We came up here and… kissed. Travis must’ve somehow seen us.”

“You kissed?” he echoed.

“But that was all. I swear to you that nothing else happened. Nothing,” she insisted.

“I believe you,” he said.

A moment of silence passed, and he asked: “do you still love him?”

“No. Of course not.”

Me? Love Darius?? I was only using him for a while… wasn’t I? Wait a minute… uh-oh.

“Good-bye Lila.”

“What? You’re not leaving me, are you?”

“Uh, no. I just need to go somewhere to think over some stuff.”

He turned away.

“But–you didn’t even tell me why you were so late getting home,” she said.

Nick said nothing as he headed out the door.

Lila stared at the bedroom door.

I loved Darius? she asked herself. Well, not anymore. And she never loved him more than she loved Nick.

Nick pulled the convertible out of the driveway.

Then he sped off.

A few days passed, as Nick stayed out all day and only returned late at night.

“So do you ever think you’re going to move back in with Mom?” Lila asked Roger.

“Don’t you think you should worry about your own issues?” he replied.

Screw you, she thought. Than again, a small part of her knew he was right.

Lila stood and held Bella next to her.

“Should I go talk to your daddy?” she asked the infant.

Bella cooed in response.

“Yeah. That’s what I thought.”

Lila headed to the sports stadium.

As she meandered to the entrance, Lila worried about what she may find.

What if he’s kissing the new trainee? she fretted. What if he’s fallen in love with her, the way he fell in love with me?

Her stomach twisted in anxiety.

One of the coaches stood in the lobby. Lila paused.

Where’s Nick? she wanted to ask, but the words froze in her throat.

She followed him and called, “Richard! Wait a second.”

He turned to consider her.

“Have you seen Nick around?” she asked. Her heart performed back flips.

“Uh, definitely not in the last several days,” he said.

“What do you mean you haven’t seen him in several days? Hasn’t he been coming here?”

“I can’t say for sure. Talk to Coach Brennan, he should know.”

“Okay. I will,” she said.

That knot of anxiety tightened, as her heart continued its Olympic feats.

Lila arrived at the local cemetery.

She’d spoken to Coach Brennan, and he mentioned that Nick had been spending a lot of time at the graveyard, but didn’t explain exactly why.

Regardless, Lila felt relieved to know Nick hadn’t been cheating on her; unlike the way she’d cheated on him.

As the sun dipped below Riverview, Lila drifted over to Nick.

He hadn’t yet realized she was there.

She glanced at the headstone.

Lexy Reed

“Hi Nick,” she softly said.

He gazed at her for a while; then finally spoke.

“It’s my fault she’s dead,” he muttered. “If I’d loved her the way I should’ve, instead of being so selfish, she’d still be alive.”

“No,” she said. “It wasn’t your fault. How can you say that? Lexy was sick. She needed help. There was nothing you could’ve done.”

“But I used her because I was lonely. She could’ve killed you and Isabella, for God’s sake, all because I’m a selfish piece of crap.”

“I’m only going to tell you this once: it isn’t your fault. Lexy wanted you since we were kids. Then she tried to trap you. You didn’t deserve to be trapped, you deserve to be happy. Lexy didn’t want you to be happy, she just wanted you to make her happy. That’s all she cared about. She was narcissistic.”

“So you’re a shrink now?” he quipped.

“Better than that, ’cause I actually know you, and I knew Lexy.”

“And… I’m so sorry for kissing Darius. I truly am. I wish I could make it up to you; but if it’s any consolation, he’s moving away and I’ll never see him or Kayla again.”

“You know that’s not what I want,” he said. “I mean, I don’t want you to never see Kayla again.”

“I know, but I think I’ll be alright. It’ll be hard at first, but I just want us to get on with our lives. I just want us to be happy. I want Bella to have two parents who get along.”

“I want us to be happy too. That’s why I’m retiring from football.”

“What? Are you serious? What–what about money?”

What about money?! Nice question, Lila. You idiot.

“We’ll never have to worry about money. I have bank accounts all over, and my biography was listed on the bestseller’s list a few months ago.”

He stepped closer to her, holding her face between his hands.

“I don’t want to lose you Lila; ever again. I can’t live without you.”

“I can’t live without you either,” she said. “I love you.”

“Then promise me you’ll never leave me for Darius,” he said as his hands slid away from her face.

For a moment, she was stunned. She’d never heard him be so brutally honest with his feelings.

“I will never, ever leave you for Darius. I love you, and only you.” And she meant it.

They embraced amidst the beauty of the summer night.

The surrounding headstones symbolized endings, but Lila and Nick’s passionate embrace symbolized a beginning.

…but there was one thing Lila didn’t consider: she was willing to let Darius go; but was Darius truly willing to let Lila go?

Mwahahaha… chapter 41 coming soon. ♥

I am so glad Nick didn’t cheat, and to hear he is retiring from football so that him and Lila can be happy is a really big step for him, and for him to finally admit he is scared of losing Lila is great too. He knows she is the other half of his soul. I love this chapter, my favourite yet 🙂

    • awww, well I’m glad you liked it. 🙂 Really though, you’ll love the next few chapters, I have soooo much planned before the ending! Yeah, I didn’t want to make it where Nick cheated… no way.
