Chapter Twenty-Eight…

Chapter 28: Bad Sims… Bad

Lila, Darius, and Kayla settled in quite nicely at their new ‘estate’.

Almost two weeks passed since they married in Vegas. Lila began to see Darius in a whole new way.

Kayla played with her blocks, sometimes emitting a drawn-out squeal of delight, and the pacifier would tumble from her mouth.

“I love you,” Darius breathed. “We’re going to be together forever, you’ll see.”

“Not if you keep looking at me like that,” she replied.

Darius and his creepy facial expressions, she thought.

He chuckled and pulled her closer to him.

Their mouths widely parted, they prepared to suck some serious face.

After kissing, Lila gazed into his eyes. An age-old question entered her mind.

Is it really possible to be in love with two men at the same time?

The following morning, Lila exited the small medical center. She received an examination from her new doctor, since Dr. Clopper had recently been fired from the hospital. Rumor had it he’d been caught with his pants down entertaining an ex-patient. And that was unethical.

Lila chuckled to herself.

Lila,” a deep masculine voice called.

She gazed up at the sky, thinking she was hearing things that weren’t there.

“Lila,” the voice repeated, this time louder.

She halted. That voice sounded like—

She should’ve kept going. She never should’ve turned around. She never should’ve walked over to him. She never should’ve… could’ve, would’ve.

He just stared at her for the longest time; then finally he spoke.

“Still beautiful as ever, Lila.”

“Don’t!” she snapped. “Don’t flirt with me! Every time you do, something inside me takes over and I get really, really STUPID. I always fall back into your arms, and I don’t want this anymore. I don’t want you! I just want to be happy and I can’t if I keep–”

“I can’t tell you how beautiful you are?” he complained.

“Just stop it, Nick. No, you can’t tell me how—how beautiful I am,” she said.

“Then can I ask how Isabella’s doing?”

“I married Darius,” she blurted. “Two weeks ago.”

He chuckled in disbelief. “You married Darius? Why wasn’t I invited to the wedding?”

She stared at him a moment. “We eloped.”

“How nice. Isabella has a new Daddy.”

“Stop it. It’s not like that, you know you can see Isabella any time.”

“Really?” he said. Before she could protest, his hand drifted to her stomach.

His fingers slid across her swollen tummy. The baby kicked at his hand, and Lila’s eyes widened.

His right hand brushed against Lila’s, and for a minute she thought he was going to hold her hand.

“I felt her move,” he said.

It was such an intimate moment, and those sky-blue eyes of his could melt ice. She felt herself weakening under his spell; but quickly snapped out of it.

“Yeah, so did I. Look, it’s getting later and I need to go. I have to get home.”

“Meet me later tonight; right here on this corner,” he said. “Eight o’clock.”

“No; no surreptitious meetings. No cheesy ‘strangers in the night’ scenarios,” she said. “I won’t be sneaking around with you, like I was when you were married to Auna.”

“You’ll be here,” he said; overly confident.

She glared at him. You’re not that hot, Nick Moore.

His hands glided across her stomach again.

Stop touching me there! The baby kicked and rolled around in response to his touch. My God, she’s already bonding to him! Stop it this instant, Isabella! I put you into this world, I can—nevermind.

“I’m sorry about Lexy,” he said, placing his hand on her arm.

“You’re always sorry, Nick.” Lila stared down at the sidewalk. Always sorry, but never willing to do the right thing in the first place.

As though reading her thoughts, his hand tightened around her arm.

“Let go. That hurts,” she said through gritted teeth. Immediately, he loosened his grip.

“The baby’s doing fine,” she said, and then began to leave.

“I’ll see you tonight,” he called out.

She grimaced as she rushed down the walkway.

Sitting on the couch, Audrey gazed around the living room.

“Nice house,” she said.

“Thanks,” Lila mumbled.

“You could’ve had the wedding in Riverview. At a church,” she said.

“Mom, I just wanted a quick wedding to Darius. No frilly flowers and no crowds of people staring at how fat I am in my wedding dress,” she said.

“But I didn’t get to see my only daughter get married,” she whined.

“Mom, please. I’ve had things on my mind, and a fancy wedding was the least of my concerns. I’m sorry if I hurt you.”

“Yeah, I know. I’m sorry too.” The room grew quiet; then Audrey asked: “so have you thought about how you’re going to get back at Lexy?”

At first, she couldn’t believe her mother asked her such a thing. But then Lila thought: yes. I’ve thought of many things I could do to get back at Lexy.

“Just let me know if you need any help,” Audrey offered.

“Seriously? Do you have any suggestions?” she asked, but then Darius entered the room. Any further discussion of Lexy flew out the window.

“Hey Audrey. What’s up?” he greeted. Then he looked at Lila. “Another investigative job is calling me. I must go,” he told her.

She rose from the sofa.

They embraced and kissed.

Kayla peered up, her huge, round eyes curious.

“Daddy, mommy,” she said.

After the kiss, Lila gazed at Kayla. It’s one thing to hurt Darius, but hurt Kayla as well? An innocent baby who thinks I’m her mother? And that was precisely why she’d never go back to Nick…

An hour later, Lila stood in the shower and beat the faucets with a wrench. She pretended the steel things were Nick’s face, among other things attached to his body. It was an excellent way to vent her frustrations.

Audrey stepped into the bathroom.

“Lila? Are you fixing things again? Things that aren’t even broke?”

“You know this is what I do whenever I get upset.”

“Okay, but I have to leave soon. I’ll talk to you about Lexy another time,” she replied.

After ‘fixing’ the shower, Lila went into the next room and cuddled Kayla.

“When you grow up, don’t ever get involved with men,” she told her.

“Thanks a lot, Lila,” Darius said. He’d returned home a few minutes earlier.

As Lila took a shower, her mind drifted back to Nick.

Why did he want to meet her in town? In fact, what did he want with her?? Why couldn’t he just let her go? Why must he keep slithering his way back into her life, only to hurt her repeatedly??

Why, why, why.

She backed away from the shower head, watching as the water cascaded down to the drain. Once again, something else that drew parallels to her relationship with Nick… and it was then that she realized something horrible, something she’d never thought of before: she was tied to him forever, no matter what; and those figurative ties centered around their unborn daughter, Isabella.

So why fight destiny? Because if you don’t, too many people would get hurt.

…but like a moth drawn to the dangerous flame, Lila found herself wandering near Aspen St.

She looked around the corner. There was no sign of Nick. Maybe he decided not to show up after all. How shocking would that be?

Nevermind. Here he comes.

He strolled up to her. She couldn’t speak, she was too ashamed of breaking her own rule once again.

She turned away from him, hiding her tears.

Nick embraced her from behind.

“You okay?” he asked.

Lila nodded, quickly recovering. The last thing she needed was for him to see her cry.

He clenched his fists, as though trying not to make a pass at her. Lila knew it was something he wasn’t accustomed to (controlling his urges). Somehow, she knew he wanted to hold her like he did on the island, to wrap his arms around her from behind.

“I want to show you something,” he suddenly said; then ran off.

It was like being kids again; and teenagers. She felt silly at first, but then rushed after him.

Of course, she couldn’t run like he could.

Damnit, I was hoping I’d never walk like this… tipped backward like the leaning tower of Pisa. More like the leaning tower of Lila.

He paused in front of an old warehouse.

She caught up with him, eyeing the spooky building.

He ran off again.

Lila followed him around the corner to a fire escape. She mounted the steps to the top of the warehouse.

Once at the top, she gazed around.

It was like being on top of the world. How ironic.

Nick hesitated; then entered a tiny room.

He quietly stared outside the dusty window. Lila wondered what he was thinking…

A few minutes passed, and he turned around.

“For what it’s worth, I swear I didn’t know Lexy was your friend,” he said. “I met her a couple days before the custody hearing. Before that, she hung around the gym a lot, where I worked out. One day she just came up and talked to me, and… you know the rest.”

“It doesn’t change anything,” she replied.

“I know it doesn’t. I just wanted to tell you that,” he said. “And, you’re right. I’m no good at being alone. I can’t stand it,” he admitted.

For a moment, she looked away from him.

Gently, he held her face in his hands.

Very badly, she wanted to throw her arms around him; to kiss him; to allow herself to fall in love with him all over again… but she couldn’t.

“Somehow, someday I think we’ll be together again,” he remarked. “When two people like us keep running into each other over a span of 23 years, it must mean something.”

Was that really her destiny? Because where Nick was concerned, so far her destiny had been nothing but pain and grief.

Chapter 29 coming shortly. Thanks for reading!    ♥ ♥ ♥

  1. Awww .< Sure she didn't DO anything with Nick.. but she still WENT! And I'm sort of happy… WHY MUST IT BE DIFFICULT 😛 Least there's not 3 guys, that's something 😛

Anyway, it was SO cute, can't wait till next time 🙂

    • Hi PlayerRac2! Yeah, she still went, lol. 😛 Like you said, at least there aren’t 3 guys!:D That would really get complicated, lol.

Thanks, I’m glad you liked this chapter too! 😀

      • I think the larger part of me wants them to end up together, seeing ad they’ve been through so much, but then that is also a bad thing >.<

Plus when I re-read it I couldn't help but feel for Kayla, she seems to have bonded with Lila, hope she doesn't get hurt….

  2. If I were Lila.. Well, let’s just say this: Lexy’s head would be parted from her body, and Nick would be hanging on the top of the Eiffel Tower O_o.. Awesome series though!

    • Hi Julia, lol you must be a new reader? anyhow, kewl! Thanks for reading, and I’m so glad you like it. 😀 I don’t blame you for being ticked at Nick. I kinda have a tendency to make the ‘heroes’ of my stories into ‘bad boys’, lol. It’s a bad habit, hehe. 😛

Don’t worry. I think Lexy will eventually get what’s comin’ to her… 😀 Oh, and maybe Nick will redeem himself at some point in the future.

  3. Great update, I love how the story is working out. Can’t wait to see what revenge Lila has planned for Lexy 🙂

    • Thanks Kim! I always appreciate your wonderful comments, and everyone else’s. 🙂 So glad y’all like the stories.

You won’t have to wait long to find out what Lila has planned for her ‘friend’, lol. 😛

Hi again PlayerRac2, lol it probably wouldn't be too good. But maybe Nick will redeem himself eventually and stop being such a man whore. 😀 Ugh, I agree about the situation with Kayla. I hate to 'hurt' her too in the story, although Travis had also bonded with Lila… It's like real life sometimes, so complicated, lol.

  5. Well actually, I’m not really new.. I think I started reading it when chapter 16 came out :), but I was too lazy to comment lol. I honestly LOVE, and I mean LOVE, your series. So much talent in it =], unlike most stories.. My only two favorite series were My Guardian Angel and this :).
